International SEO illustration: global expansion

International SEO is the layer that lets Google and the AI engines understand which version of your site belongs in which country. Get the architecture, the hreflang and the signals right and each market can rank on its own. Get them wrong and your pages compete with each other.

Our international SEO service covers the technical setup, the market-by-market research, the content strategy and the monitoring to open and sustain visibility in multiple countries.

What's included

Architecture and country targeting

We help you decide between subdirectories (/es/, /fr/), subdomains (es.site.com) or ccTLDs (site.es), based on your resources, authority consolidation and legal structure. We then set up the configuration your CDN, sitemaps and hreflang implementation require.

Hreflang implementation and audit

Hreflang is where most international sites bleed traffic. We implement it per URL or via sitemap, validate every pair with reciprocal checks, and catch the silent errors (orphan hreflang, wrong region codes, conflicting canonical and hreflang) that cost rankings in specific markets.

Market-by-market keyword research

A keyword set per market, in the local language, built with local search intent in mind. Not a translation of your home-market keyword list: volume data per country, SERP checks from each market and competitor mapping per territory.

Multilingual content strategy

We decide, per topic and per market, whether to translate, transcreate or create original content. For large sites we define the templates and the quality guardrails for local-language writers; for smaller sites we handle the editorial work directly.

Local link building per country

Authority built in-market, from local publications and sector sites. Quality targets are set per country, because what qualifies as a strong referring domain in Germany does not match the US or Brazil.

International SEO reporting

Rankings, impressions, clicks and conversions broken down by country and language, with hreflang errors tracked over time. Delivered through SEOcrawl, our own software, which handles the per-country breakdown natively.

How the service runs

  1. 1

    Diagnosis (weeks 1 to 3)

Audit of the current international setup: existing hreflang (if any), country signals, positions per market and keyword gaps per country. The output is a prioritized plan with the markets to open or defend first.

  2. 2

    Architecture decision and setup

If the structure needs changing, we plan the migration carefully (hreflang, redirects, canonicals and Search Console properties) so authority is not lost in transit. If the structure is sound, we move straight to content.

  3. 3

    Market-by-market activation

We open one market at a time (or in parallel pairs when resources allow) with the full stack: keyword research, content, hreflang and local links. Opening markets in sequence lets us learn and refine before scaling.

  4. 4

    Monitoring and iteration

Per-country performance, hreflang validation, Googlebot activity per locale, and adjustments as the local SERPs evolve.

Timeline and expected results

International SEO is a medium-term investment. The setup phase typically runs 1 to 2 months. First meaningful rankings in a new market appear between months 3 and 6. Mature performance, the point where the ROI case closes, usually takes 6 to 12 months per market, depending on the sector and the existing authority of the home-market domain.

International SEO service: FAQ

+

Subdirectory, subdomain or ccTLD?

It depends on your authority profile and resources. Subdirectories (/es/, /fr/) keep the whole site’s authority consolidated and are the easiest to maintain. ccTLDs (site.es) send the strongest country signal but split authority and may require a legal structure per country. Subdomains sit in between. The right answer for your site comes out of the diagnosis.

+

Should we translate or create original content per market?

It depends on the topic and the market. Transactional pages often translate well with light localization. Informational content usually benefits from being written locally, because search intent and the entities Google associates with the query differ per country. We agree the mix per topic.

+

How does Google decide which version to show in each country?

Mainly through hreflang (which signals language and region), the ccTLD if you have one, and local signals such as local links, language, currency and addresses. Hreflang is the strongest single signal and also the most frequently broken.

+

Do we need a local link building partner in every market?

Only when the market is competitive enough to require it. For most engagements we handle outreach centrally and bring in local partners only for Tier 1 markets. The decision is made per market, as part of the diagnosis.

+

How do you handle markets where Google is not the dominant search engine?

China (Baidu), Russia (Yandex) and South Korea (Naver) require specific work beyond standard international SEO. We cover the fundamentals that apply there (indexation, structure, local hosting signals) and bring in specialist partners when a client needs full-depth optimization on those engines.
